Indoor Owl Show
Visit our Animal Encounters barn near the Tommy Tractor Play Barn and sit in on our informative Owl Show which runs for approx 20minutes. Please see our Daily Park Information page for times. The Animal Encounter Barn doors are opened for the Owl Show at the times shown around the park, we do not open the doors earlier as we use the minutes before to prepare the Owls for the show and like to ensure they are kept calm. Once everyone’s inside, the doors are closed and unfortunately late admission isn't permitted to avoid disturbing and upsetting the owls. Please note that all children must be accompanied by their parents or responsible adult and Knockhatch reserve the right to refuse admission and change/cancel a show without notice.
If you visit our Owl Show off peak and are in a small audience, you may be lucky to be able to stroke an owl, or be given the opportunity to hold one! This decision will be down to the handlers, the time left and if the owls are happy. Please ensure that if you do touch any owl that you carefully wash your hands afterwards at one of our hand washing facilities. Thank you.
Outdoor Owl Show (April 2017 onward)
Sitting in on one of our owl shows is a real learning experience. Find out about Mufusa our Southern White Faced Owl, but don’t be deceived by his size for he is a ferocious predator, he has enormous eyes which help to pick out its food source in low light conditions, including insects which they love to eat. He has a small brain (1/4 of the size of a baked bean) which makes them one of the least intelligent birds.
You may also get to see Rusty our Tawny Owl a species of owl widespread in England and well adaptive in the environment. This owl is about the size of a pigeon with black eyes, which means it is nocturnal. This owl uses stealth to fly quietly to creep up on its prey. When this owl swoops over your head, you won’t hear a sound!
Gandalf our UK Barn Owl is a firm favourite, did you know that they weren't known as a Barn Owls until the Romans invaded. (You may know them as the Ghost Owl). Gandalf can hear something 100m away, the length of a football pitch! Are Barn Owls water resistant? How can you tell if a Barn Owl is a male or female? Come to one of our shows and maybe you'll find out!
