Donkeys at Knockhatch Children's Farm

We have two donkeys, we have named them Jack and Jill. Donkeys are related to horses and zebras and they were first domesticated around 4500 years ago and have been working with people ever since

Donkeys feet are not designed for walking on lush grass, they should be on rocky areas.  If donkeys eat too much grass then, just like horses and ponies, they can get a condition called laminitis which is an inflammation of the hoof so we try to keep them on less good pasture

A male donkey is called a jack and a female is called a jennet or jenny

Like horses and ponies, donkeys are measured in "hands". One hand is equal to 4"

A donkey can live for 25 years.  The oldest known donkey was 60 years old but a 45 year old donkey would be considered very old indeed
